Arya Ashtangika Margaya Sinhala PDF 30: A Guide to the Noble Eightfold Path
The Noble Eightfold Path (Arya Ashtangika Margaya) is the core teaching of Buddhism that leads to the cessation of suffering (dukkha) and the attainment of nirvana. It consists of eight factors that can be grouped into three categories: wisdom (pañña), ethical conduct (sÄ«la), and mental development (bhÄvanÄ).

Wisdom (Pañña)
Wisdom is the ability to see things as they really are, without being influenced by ignorance (avijjÄ), craving (taá¹hÄ), or attachment (upÄdÄna). Wisdom is developed by cultivating two factors: right view (sammÄ-diá¹á¹hi) and right intention (sammÄ-saá¹ kappa).
Right View (SammÄ-Diá¹á¹hi)
Right view is the correct understanding of the four noble truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the origin of suffering, the truth of the cessation of suffering, and the truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. Right view also includes the understanding of the law of karma: the principle that every action has a corresponding result, either in this life or in future lives.
Right view helps us to see the reality of impermanence (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and non-self (anattÄ) in all phenomena. Right view also helps us to develop faith (saddhÄ) in the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha, and to follow their guidance.
Right Intention (SammÄ-Saá¹ kappa)
Right intention is the mental attitude that motivates our actions. Right intention is based on three aspects: renunciation (nekkhamma), goodwill (avyÄpÄda), and harmlessness (avihiá¹sÄ).
Renunciation means letting go of sensual pleasures and worldly attachments that cause suffering. Goodwill means wishing for the happiness and well-being of oneself and others. Harmlessness means avoiding any action that harms oneself or others.
Right intention helps us to purify our mind from greed, hatred, and delusion. Right intention also helps us to generate wholesome thoughts, words, and deeds that lead to happiness and peace.
Ethical Conduct (Sīla)
Ethical conduct is the moral behavior that supports our spiritual development. Ethical conduct is based on three factors: right speech (sammÄ-vÄcÄ), right action (sammÄ-kammanta), and right livelihood (sammÄ-ÄjÄ«va).
Right Speech (SammÄ-VÄcÄ)
Right speech is the abstention from four types of unwholesome speech: lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter. Right speech also includes speaking the truth, speaking in a way that promotes harmony, speaking in a way that is gentle and kind, and speaking in a way that is meaningful and beneficial.
Right speech helps us to avoid harming ourselves or others with our words. Right speech also helps us to cultivate trust, respect, and friendship with others.
Right Action (SammÄ-Kammanta)
Right action is the abstention from three types of unwholesome actions: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. Right action also includes protecting life, respecting property, and being faithful in relationships.
Right action helps us to avoid harming ourselves or others with our deeds. Right action also helps us to develop virtue, generosity, and compassion.
Right Livelihood (SammÄ-ÄjÄ«va)
Right livelihood is the abstention from earning a living in ways that harm oneself or others. Right livelihood also includes earning a living in ways that are honest, lawful, and beneficial. 061ffe29dd
