The game is set in a fictional port town called Amihama during the last days of the Shogunate. Players can create their own samurai[7] and choose to align themselves with one of three factions: the pro-government forces, the anti-government rebels seeking to repel foreigners, or the British Navy stationed in the city to negotiate a peace treaty. When the negotiations between the local government of Amihama and the British goes wrong after a Prajna attack at the meeting point, the Tokugawa Shogunate sends one of their Tairō to quash the revolt.
For the uninitiated, Way of the Samurai games, (this one included) are best described as structured, samurai-themed takes on the open-world genre. Each installment drops players into the toe-socks of a nameless wandering samurai making his way through some place embroiled in factional turmoil. The crisis this time is on the island of Amihama in the 19th century, as foreign powers arrive in Japan and crack its three-hundred-year isolation.
Ever wondered just how much power one person can have on the events of their life? As in, how much influence can you have on your environment, during a historical era of Japan? While your answers may vary, the effect that a main character, or samurai in this case, has on the international relations of the mid-19th century is truly staggering in this sword-wielding game.
The Smithy is your place to repair, craft, and improve your weapons in the game. This is without a doubt the most harrowing thing to get your head wrapped around in my opinion, since a good sword can save your samurai from certain death during a fight.
Though the story has a serious edge to it, Way of the Samurai 4 has a number of goofy additions that lighten the mood. Player characters can be wildly customized through the use of accessories, bonus items that can be placed anywhere on your samurai's body and resized. Want to buy a water bottle accessory and then make it take up your character's whole body? You can!
Here is the first episode of my play-through. Things end real bad for me but, in classic Way of the Samurai fashion, it is pleasantly surprising and did not sting too badly. Follow along as I bumble my way through this funky version of Japan. Filled with loads of ninjas, samurai and a British warrior named Melinda Megamelons.
I hear that Way of the Samurai 4 [official site] is an odd game, the sort that is wobbly in places but still wins some people over simply because it's not quite like anything else out there. Set in a fictional Japanese port town, it focuses on the conflict between pro- and anti-government forces, and the pesky foreigners (us lot) who are stationed in the settlement. As a customised samurai, you'll be able to involve yourself in all of that rigmarole, or muck about in the minigames on offer. And then you can do it all again, dealing with the consequences of your previous life.
This huge trust in the player and greater feeling of agency was scaled back in WotS4, and compensated for with a greater variety of crazy outfits for your samurai which were a lot of fun. I prefer the looser approach taken by WotS3 though, and you can still create some awesome characters, especially if you make use of the wealth of costumes and accessories on offer. ;D
A nameless samurai enters the harbour town of Amihama, a focal point for rising frustrations between the isolationist and expansionist ideologies of Japan at the end of the 19th Century. Breaking up an altercation between the Shogunate Magistrates and a criminal gang, he makes an impression on the citizens mainly for doing it all in his very western boxer shorts. 781b155fdc
